정지태 교수는 아버지의 영향으로 늘 예술가들과 함께했다. 대학 동아리에서 첫 사진기를 든 그때부터 평생에 걸친 의사 생활동안에도 꾸준히 그림, 사진 등 미술에 대한 관심을 키웠다. 2019년 여름 정년퇴임 한 뒤 취미생활에 몰두하여 그동안 몇 차례 열린 동인전에서 우수한 예술성을 과시하며 작가의 반열에 올랐다.
Art spaceX 갤러리는 서초구 청룡마을길에 공간을 마련하여 국내 중견작가 및 신흥 작가들의 발판이 되는 전시를 선보이고 있다. 8월과 9월에 걸쳐 신흥 예술가들에게 국제 무대의 경험을 제공하는 현대미술제를 무사히 마치고, 이후 다가오는 9월 전시로 정지태 교수의 전시를 준비하였다.

이번 전시는 꽃, 인물, 차용(키키 스미스, 베르나르 뷔페)의 세 가지 주제로 총 21점의 작품으로 구성되어 있다. 각 작품은 작가의 예술적 탐구와 실험의 결과물로서, 디지털 기술을 활용해 구현한 추상적 이미지를 선보인다. 전시 공간은 두 개의 층으로 나뉘며, 1층에는 8점, 지하 1층에는 13점의 작품이 전시되어 있다.
전시 제목 《사진기를 버리고》는 이중적인 의미를 지닌다. 첫째로, 작가 정지태가 대학 시절부터 지속적으로 사진과 가까이 지내며 사진기를 손에 쥐었다 놓기를 반복해 온 삶을 반영한다. 둘째로, 이번 전시에서는 전통적인 사진 촬영의 방식을 넘어선 새로운 예술적 시도를 나타낸다. 즉, 사진기 자체를 버린 것이 아니라, 사진과 포토샵 등의 기술을 통해 추상 이미지의 세계를 창조하는 창작자로서의 정체성을 강조하고 있다. 이는 렌즈를 통해 대상을 포착하고 그대로 재현하는 것이 아니라, 디지털 기술을 활용하여 피사체를 재해석하고 재구성하는 작가의 현대적 예술관을 함축한다.
The Art Space X Gallery, located on Cheongnyongmaeul-gil in Seocho-gu, serves as a platform for both established and emerging artists through its curated exhibitions. Following the successful conclusion of its contemporary art festival, which spanned August and September and aimed at providing emerging artists with international exposure, the gallery is now preparing for its upcoming exhibition featuring the works of Professor Jitae Choung in September.
Professor Jitae Choung has always been involved in the arts, influenced by his father. From his first camera in a university club, he has maintained an interest in art, including painting and photography, throughout his medical career. After retiring in 2019, he dedicated himself to his hobby and has demonstrated exceptional artistic talent in several group exhibitions.
This exhibition consists of 21 pieces under the themes of flowers, figures, and borrowing (inspired by Kiki Smith and Bernard Buffet). Each piece showcases abstract images created through the artist's artistic exploration and experimentation using digital technology. The exhibition space is divided into two levels, with 8 pieces displayed on the first floor and 13 pieces on the lower floor.
The title of the exhibition, “Leaving Camera” holds a dual meaning. Firstly, it reflects Choung's lifelong relationship with photography, repeatedly picking up and putting down the camera since his university days. Secondly, it signifies a departure from traditional photography towards new artistic endeavors. By emphasizing the artist's identity as a creator who uses photography and Photoshop to create abstract images, the exhibition symbolizes a modern artistic perspective that interprets and reconstructs subjects through digital technology rather than simply capturing and reproducing them.
