線을 찾아서

우리가 보고 있는 線은 자연의 선과 인간이 만든 線이 있다. 인간의 線은 직선이 기본 선이고, 자연의 線은 곡선이 기본이다. 點이 확장되면 線을 이룬다

線은 點과 함께 아름다움의 2가지 중심축이다. 따라서 어떤 線을 선택하느냐는 의지는 조형예술의 핵심이다. 예술가들은 순도 높은 자신만의 線을 통해서 스스로 예술의 뼈대를 만든다.

사진은 직접 線을 그리지 않는 대신, 有意味한 고유의 線을 찾는다. 인공적인 線을 찾는 사람도 있지만, 주어진 자연의 線에 집중하는 사진가도 있다. 한수정은 후자에 속한다. 흔하지만 지나치기 쉬운 주변 식물들에 서 線을 구한다. 자연스러운 曲線이 촬영의 대상이 되는 까닭이다.

이들 線과 남은 여백의 배분이 조형적 美를 만들어낸다. 넘쳐도 부족해서도 안 된다. 공간 속에서 어떤 線을 어떻게 볼 것인가? 사진가의 美意識을 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 단서다.

다음은 사진을 드러내는 프린트 방식이 맛깔스러워야 한다. 이 사진들은 순수한 수작업(Hand made)의 산물이다. 19세기 후반 유럽에서 유행했던 검 프린팅(gum printing)을 적용했다. 이 기술은 회화를 닮은 사진을 만들기 위해 Alphone Poitevin(1855년)에 의해 개발됐다. 수채화 물감을 사진에 적용하는 방식이 일반적이다.

한수정은 수채화 물감 대신에 물감의 원재료인 안료(pigment)를 감광물질과 혼합하여 사용한다. 칼라를 배제하고 단일 색을 판화지에 도포한 후에 필름과 판화지를 1:1로 밀착해서 암실에서 빛으로 구워 낸다. 색을 쓰지 않겠다는 것은 線에 집중하겠다는 계산된 의도다.

정리하자면, 흔히 볼 수 있으나 지나치기 쉬운 자연의 섬세한 線을 작업의 소재로 삼고, 고전적 인화 기법인 검 프린트의 현대적 재해석을 통해서, 자신만의 독특한 세계를 만들어 가고 있다.

Discovering the line

The lines we behold encompass both those crafted by nature and those borne of human endeavor. While the straight line is fundamental to humans, the curve reigns as nature's fundamental. As points extend, they form a line.

Lines and points stand together as dual axes of beauty. Thus, the willful act of selecting a line is central to the essence of sculptural art. Artists forge the backbone of their artistry through their unique and dense lines.

In photography, rather than drawing lines directly, we seek out meaningful and unique lines. Some may pursue artificial lines, yet others focus on the lines inherent in nature. Sujung Han belongs to the latter group, finding lines in common foliage often overlooked. It is the natural curves that become the subject of her captures.

The distribution of these lines and the remaining spaces give birth to a sculptural beauty. It should neither overflow nor be lacking. How one perceives lines within space is a crucial clue to the photographer's aesthetic consciousness.

Moreover, the printing method used to reveal these photographs must be exquisite. These images are products of pure hand craftsmanship. They employ the gum printing technique that was in vogue in late 19th century Europe, developed by Alphone Poitevin in 1855 to create photographs reminiscent of paintings. The application of watercolor pigments to photographs is common.

However, Han eschews watercolor pigments in favor of mixing pigments, the raw materials of paint, with photosensitive substances.

Excluding color, a single hue is applied to the printing paper, which is then adhered to the film in a 1:1 ratio and exposed to light in a darkroom. The decision to abstain from color is a calculated intent to focus on the lines.

In summary, by employing the delicate lines of nature often overlooked but readily available, and through a modern reinterpretation of the classical printmaking technique of gum printing, Han is crafting her unique world of art.
