I. 프롤로그
The Eternal Art of Light
I. Prologue
Known as an ‘Unconventional Painter’ in the church, and as an ‘Unconventional Priest’ in the art scene— Father Enjoong Kim creates the “The Eternal Art of Light” world. Via paintings, as well as stained glass and ceramics, he conveys messages of “emptiness and fullness”, “meditation and prayer”, while exploring the aesthetics of the “sublime” contained within them.
II. Painting – The Dreams and Colors of Light
Kim Enjoong's 60th anniversary retrospective exhibition theme was "The Dream of Light." In the foreword to the exhibition, Kim Enjoong confessed that he had been inspired by Marc Chagall (1887–1985), who expressed the mystical world of the Old Testament through his own unique style, full of dreams and poetry. Kim Enjoong also expressed his aspiration to open a new chapter in art, resembling the prophetic freedom rooted in Catholic faith that can be seen in the works of El Greco (1541–1614). Furthermore, he, inspired by Fra Angelico (1395–1455), shared his own artistic motivation:
“The Kingdom of Heaven is simple, but the earth I live on is complicated. I shall dream bigger. I need to dedicate more time to bring out into space the joyful tones of Fra Angelico.”
These determination and artistic aspirations all stem from the artist’ dream to capture the "glorious world of God's light" in his works, which he calls "The Dream of Light." As Wendy Beckett (1930–2018) once described, Kim Enjoong’s art is something “emerging from the depth of prayer”. His paintings can truly be seen as both a dream and a prayer toward the light.
Then, what is ‘The Color of Light' in Kim Enjoong’s paintings? It refers to the true world of his works —a world revealed by light that overcomes the darkness. As he himself once said, “Art is a constant journey from darkness toward light”. “The Color of Light” serves as a metaphor for art as a whole in his practice. Stepping away from metaphor and looking at it scientifically, 'light' refers to the visible light (electromagnetic waves) that human eye can perceive. This includes the familiar spectrum of rainbow colors visible when sunlight passes through a prism. So, “The Color of Light” focuses on the diverse colors within the visible spectrum — since seeing color is essentially seeing visible light. In simple terms, color is “the eye’s response to wavelengths of light.” More precisely, it is an experience that occurs when light hits the retina’s cone cells, which then convert it into electrical signals processed by the brain. In this sense, color is not only a matter of hue (red, blue, yellow, etc.) but also includes properties like brightness (lightness or darkness) and saturation (intensity or purity of the color). Thus, color is a physical phenomenon defined by how light is absorbed and reflected, incorporating both the color and brightness aspects of what we see.
“The Color of Light” that artist Kim Enjoong brings onto a white canvas represents the presence of brightness that overcomes darkness. Here, “color” is seen as both the messenger of light and another name on the same level as light itself. When he applies oil paint over a meticulously prepared white surface — primed with gesso, medium, and paint — he intentionally leaves large areas of white space, making those parts appear like white light itself. This technique enhances the theme of “The Color of Light.” White light may appear colorless, but it is actually made up of all the wavelengths of visible light combined — containing every color seen in a rainbow. We know that in paint, mixing many colors leads to subtractive color mixing, which often results in black or dark tones as brightness decreases. In light, however, combining different wavelengths creates additive color mixing, which leads to increased brightness, ultimately producing white light. In Kim’s work, the white space on the canvas is technically created with white medium and paint, but it visually resembles white light — as if various wavelengths of light have come together through additive color mixing.
Moreover, father Kim Enjoong applies blue or red oil paints over the white canvas with a transparency similar to watercolor. By mixing oil paint with large amounts of volatile turpentine or linseed oil, he dilutes the paint, allowing it to soak into the canvas surface and like ink being absorbed into paper. As a result, his works often resemble East Asian ink wash paintings (sumukhwa) or Zen paintings (seonhwa) on canvas. Just as ink leaves behind layers of dark and light tones as water evaporates on traditional paper, his oil paintings show deep tonal shifts — where cool and warm tones, like different wavelengths of light, encounter one another as the oils evaporate from the canvas. Kim Enjoong once said: “My painting is neither Eastern nor Western — it is universal.” In his creative process, Kim uses a combination of broad brushes, round calligraphy brushes, palette knives, and even squeegees. He employs a wide range of techniques, painting, dripping, drawing, layering, erasing, and wiping, to transform the white surface of the canvas into something soft yet dynamic. Despite these complex methods, the final result is strikingly simple. His paintings achieve a delicate dialogue between what is painted and what is left untouched, creating a harmony of fullness and emptiness. In doing so, they guide us on a journey — from darkness toward the Dreams and Colors of Light.
III.
(Eglise Saint-Patrick, oratoire Saint-Erc, Slande, Irlande),

III. Stained Glass – The Aesthetics of Sublimity Reaching for Light
For artist Kim, stained glass is another form of creation encountered on the journey toward “The Dream and Colors of Light.” It is both the work of “seeking heavenly light from the darkness of reality”, and a form of “faith” expressed by a priest-painter who strives to represent “God’s kingdom on this earth” in accordance with Catholic theology. “Through more than twenty years of working with stained glass, I have come to a deeper understanding of the finiteness of human existence. Just as the most spectacular stained glass cannot shine on its own without the sun, so is a human nothing but a lifeless being without the grace of God. Stained glass is not just a beautiful ornament; I pray that it may become a path of liberation, leading beyond death toward eternal life.”
Stained glass is “a path connecting light and darkness, and a window through which one receives God’s grace.” Just as painting has long been a window to view the world, Kim Engoong’s stained glass stands as “a window to behold God and to receive His grace.” As a heavenly light falling on the walls and floors of the temple, warming the praying congregation, it leads us to reflect on ourselves. At the same time, stained glass is also a window of wisdom, drawing us to recognize that light itself is composed of shimmering “The Colors of Light,” each with its own wavelength. He created stained glass works of “a unique style that Westerners find hard to imitate” to be able to reflect the entering into the darkness where no light exists to fill up the space with grace. Kim Enjoong’s highly original visual language in stained glass can be broadly characterized in several ways. To mention briefly: first, unlike figurative works depicting the icons of saints, his stained glass is composed of non-figurative or abstract images in which no form is concretized.
Second, his stained glass is free from the limitations of lead lines. Third, rather than transferring a maquette onto glass and firing it, he paints directly on glass with pigments before firing. To achieve clean watercolor effect, he paints with an oriental brush, firing the work multiple times in heat reaching 700 degrees. The completion of such stained glass demands countless artistic experiments and inevitable trial and error. Like the stained glass itself—born of suffering and trial— Kim Enjoong endures long periods of patience in the pursuit of faith and beauty. As a result, breaking away from the mosaic-like color effects that came from the use of maquettes, his work creates ‘the Colors of Light’ that reveal the marbling effects of watercolor or decalcomania, where saturation, brightness, and shading blend freely.”
These experiments continue even on the installation site. Kim Enjoong needs to foresee how light would pass through the stained glass and fall on the walls and floors of the sanctuary, so he meticulously checks each aspect of the work. This requires not only consideration of the building’s orientation but also predicting the sun’s altitude through the changes of summer and winter. Consequently, he places cool colors like blue and purple on the direction of sunrise, and warm colors like red and yellow in the direction of sunset, balancing “The Colors of Light” within the sanctuary. This is because short-wavelength cool colors dominate the morning light, while long-wavelength warm colors dominate the evening light. To conduct these experiments, he would even place glass panels directly where sunlight would fall, studying the effects of light. Such careful exploration is part of the process. These experiments were carried out in multiple locations, beginning with the Crypte de la Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres in France in 2006, and continuing at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral (Église Saint-Patrick, oratoire Saint-Erc) in Slane, Ireland, in 2008.
Since 1973, Kim Enjoong’s work has been installed, on a remarkable scale, in 45 cathedrals and churches across Europe, including the Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Coeur (Espace Cardinal DANNEELS) in Brussels, Belgium, in 2016. What is particularly interesting is that, despite the painstaking experiments and labor involved, his stained glass is praised for a simplicity reminiscent of Romanesque art:
“My stained glass has no figures and only very simple colors; I seek the meaning of a simplicity that can be called instinctive. In this way, I make the walls built of stone sing. Stained glass is the eye of the church.”
Indeed, the sublime aesthetic conveyed by his stained glass lies in its simplicity — a simplicity full of awe. Today, the sublime is no longer just the overwhelming magnitude that inspires fear before the Creator; it also embraces gratitude for God’s grace, praise of Him, and the sharing of His word—an “awe simplicity.” After all, is the light that pierces the darkness any different from God’s word? This is a message both simple and faithful.
IV. Epilogue
Kim Enjoong, who explores the messages of “emptiness and fullness,” “meditation and prayer,” and the aesthetics of the “sublime” they contain, continues to see himself as a messenger of God’s simple message even today. As a priest-painter who sings of the Creator’s grace, he tirelessly lives out the joy of labor given by the Creator, striving to be a humble instrument of that divine calling.
To close, here is an excerpt from his 1987 work journal, which reads like a psalm and reflects this deep spiritual vision:
“To paint is to seek a new heaven and a new earth.
There will be no need to paint in the next world—
for it will be the eternal present where time stands still.
What more would one long for where hope is fulfilled?
But the beginning is half the journey—
the first step toward the next world is already a reflection of it.
The life of a saint or an artist lives on through the work they leave behind,
and after that, overflowing silence adds dignity.
True newness is something fresh—
never seen, never heard before.
The one who descends to the lowest depths
returns with the most radiant treasure.
To paint is not to manufacture—
but to recover a lost paradise.
It is to create harmony with lines and colors,
to fasten fleeting moments onto the fabric of eternity.
Even the finest artist is still but a humble servant.
I want to stand like a tree of life,
its branches heavy with ripened fruit,
composing joy upon a white canvas.”
