Art Space X

The exhibition Best of Autumn, held at Art Space X from October 10 to October 29, 2024, spotlights the distinct artistic achievements of two painters, Chang Suk Won and Jung Boc Su. This two-person exhibition presents a comparative exploration of each artist’s unique interpretation of the human form, offering a window into their respective artistic practices.

A key feature of this exhibition is the ‘Live Painting‘ sessions that both artists will conduct throughout the exhibition period. These spontaneous large-scale canvas works, created without prior planning, reflect a creative dialogue between the two artists. Visitors are invited to witness the evolution of these works in real time, gaining insight into the dynamic process of artistic creation.

Chang Suk Won, drawing inspiration from Buddhist Zen(선,禪) philosophy, engages in a contemplative reflection on the inner self through his series “Fool,” which captures eternal truths beyond the ordinary. His works strive to depict moments of enlightenment found in everyday life. In contrast, Jung Boc Su’s work delves into the primal instincts of humanity, using the human body as a central motif. His recent works, however, mark a philosophical shift, posing deeper questions about human existence and expanding his focus from the biological to the metaphysical dimensions of the human condition. Together, Chang and Jung present divergent yet complementary views on human nature, interpreting spiritual awakening, primal urges, and psychological depth in different ways.

작가는 오랜 기간동안 ‘바보, 바보’, ‘너는 누구냐?’, “I LOVE YOU, I HATE YOU!’

Artist b has long sought the untamed vision of a soul that remains unconditioned, even within the structures of society. This desire is reflected in the figures of his ongoing Fool series. Chang remarked, “When you become a fool, you find peace, and the purpose of existence reveals itself. Let go, and you will see.” This statement reveals his deep connection to Zen(선,禪) Buddhist philosophy, which he has cherished since his youth. Zen(선,禪) is a meditative practice aimed at achieving enlightenment or spiritual transcendence through a calm and focused mind. Through the figure of the “Fool,” Chang seeks a vision that reaches beyond the everyday, discovering a serene smile amidst the challenges of life.

Another notable aspect of Chang’s work is the symbolic meaning in his use of color and form. His bold, primary colors are borrowed from the traditional Korean Buddhist temple paintings and the 오방색Obangsaek (the five cardinal colors of East Asia), which he reinterprets in a contemporary way. This suggests that his work transcends mere visual expression, encompassing deep philosophical and religious significance.

This exhibition features 17 new works and 4 earlier pieces. Over many years, Chang has developed various series, such as Fool, Fool, Who Are You?, and I Love You, I Hate You!, all of which are extended in this exhibition. The Who Are You? series portrays the “Fool,” detached from the harshness of reality, seemingly questioning their own identity, while the I Love You, I Hate You! series expresses the contrasting emotions of love and hate.

This exhibition presents works that offer a glimpse into the new artistic direction of artist Jung Boc Su. For over 50 years, he has explicitly depicted humanity’s survival instincts—eating, drinking, excreting, fighting, and engaging in sex—through his art. Jung has consistently explored the essence of human beings rooted in primal instincts, using the “body” as his primary subject. However, subtle changes began with his 2023 exhibition A Map to the Womb. In this exhibition, two pieces from the A Map to the Womb series will also be displayed, reflecting resistance against the inevitable realities of death and decay faced by all living beings. The artist attempts to return to the womb, the origin and source of life, but as he confronts the impossibility of achieving this, his longing only intensifies. Gradually, the question “Where do we come from, and where are we going?” started to emerge in his work. Jung's focus has shifted over time from the “Acting Human” to the “Thinking Human.”

The five new works presented in this exhibition—Thinking Rain, Human Is, Thought of a Thought of a Thought, Thought of a Thought 1, and Thought of a Thought 2—clearly reflect this new direction, even in their titles. The subject of his paintings has also transitioned from the body to the face, and this shift is reflected in the expressions. Unlike his earlier works, where intense emotions are conveyed through wide eyes, gaping mouths, and signature teeth, his recent pieces portray faces with tightly closed mouths and calm, composed eyes. Among the nine earlier works on display, pieces like Angry Beast and Human World show faces expelling emotions with their tongues. The shattered fragments of speech, vividly depicted in The Profound Study of Survival, reappear, with bright fragments attached to faces and masks. However, these fragments are notably absent from his recent works.

Although Jung continues to depict humans driven by instinct, it seems that his focus is shifting from the biological human to the philosophical human. His portraits not only document the “Anguish of Survival” and the “Futility of The Body,” but also present a “Psychological Map of The Eternally Solitary Human.” The bodies and faces in his works are not just biological forms; they are portraits of the mind and the inner self.
